I would characterize my first face-to-face meeting with the playwright Tylie Shider as two kindred, like-minded spirits forging an immediate artistic bond of brotherhood. Tylie and I came together in an artistic process with the play Don’t miss Doris Hines (2025), which is the private and public story of my mother, the significant jazz singer. Our origins in New York, New Jersey, and the broader East Coast laid the groundwork for a common, compatible frame of reference, exchange of ideas, and artistic expression. This interview is an extension of that kindred discussion.
