Join us on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 to welcome our fifth Pedantic cohort. The Pedantic Residents will be giving brief presentations on their backgrounds and their practices.
Pedantic Arts Residency (Pedantic) is a month-long cross-disciplinary program co-hosted by Headwater Media and Casey Droege Cultural Productions. We have invited three residents whose practices span visual art, curating, and writing to explore the city of Pittsburgh and its creative communities.
We’re looking forward to welcoming Arinitwe Peter (Visual Artist), Maritza Bautista (Curator), and K E Garland (Writer).

Arinitwe Peter (he/him) is a contemporary Ugandan visual ‘artivist’ using art to communicate issues that he believes are detrimental to the development and progress of African people. His work focuses on key themes including female rights, the destruction of our planet, and the division between African politicians and the people they serve. Arinitwe is also founder of ‘Plastik Talks’, a community-based organization in Kampala, that is using visual arts to engage the youth in Uganda to fight for their environment.
Maritza Bautista (she/her) is a Tex-Mex/Pocha multidisciplinary artist, educator and cultural worker from Laredo, Texas. She earned a Master of Arts in Art Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2009). Through her work, she explores economic disparities and the survival mechanisms of working class people. Maritza sustains meaningful, collaborative art practices that explore and create a dialectic milieu inhabited by issues unique to marginalized communities, and is driven by a passion to create spaces of art that aid transformative social justice work. She has over 20 years experience in the field of art, and is the Executive Director of Daphne Art Foundation
K E Garland (she/her) is an award-winning creative nonfiction writer, blogger, and author based in Florida. She uses personal essays and memoir to de-marginalize women’s experiences with an intent to highlight and humanize contemporary issues, such as reproductive rights, intergenerational trauma, and mental health issues. Her work has appeared in several online magazines and anthologies, including Midnight & Indigo and Chicken Soup for the Soul. Garland’s debut memoir, In Search of a Salve: Memoir of a Sex Addict was released September 2023 with NEW Reads Publications. She is married, with two adult daughters and is an associate professor at a community college.
