Learn more about us:
What’s the purpose of this residency?
Unlike so many arts residency programs, Pedantic is not production focused. Instead, we invite you to explore the creative community and city of Pittsburgh. We aim to connect you with people, ideas, and resources through this unique month-long program.
Where will we spend our time?
The Pedantic Arts Residency building, owned by Henry J. Simonds, is located within the neighborhood of Garfield. The first and second floors are rented by a local arts business. The top two floors host the Pedantic Apartment, which includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and communal space. Your bedroom will be completely private, however the communal space of the apartment will also operate as the program space where we will host occasional dinners and special events.
What’s the vibe?
We’re not overly stuffy or formal here. We don’t belong to an institution. Rather, we’re creative, enthusiastic individuals who run our own artistic endeavors and are incredibly passionate about what we do. We’re hoping you are too! We strive to provide a safe experience that encourages openness, and are looking for residents who are flexible and excited to explore.
Is this residency a good fit for me?
This residency is not for everyone. We aim to tailor the experience for each cohort and create the connections you’re looking for. However, to make the most of the month in Pittsburgh, we are looking for self-motivated creative individuals who are eager to immerse themselves in a myriad of experiences. Are you comfortable with meeting new people on a regular basis? Are you comfortable sharing spaces with folks you don’t know yet? Can you speak up for yourself with concerns and questions? Are you willing to do some of your own research and set your own goals? If all of this sounds great to you, then yes, you do fit!
What if I don't live in the U.S.?
Pedantic welcomes artists from all parts of the globe and has hosted many residents who are based outside of the United States. We recognize that traveling into the U.S. has become a larger challenge due to the current administration. Pedantic will support visa applications and offer assistance as needed and able. However, we encourage prospective residents to research their country’s immigration and travel policies ensuring there is a potential path forward prior to applying.
What if I already live in PIttsburgh?
Pittsburgh-based artists are not eligible to apply for the arts residency or the research grant as Pedantic is specifically for creatives from outside of the city. But, we love Pittsburgh creatives! As a program focused on building relationsips, there are other ways to participate. Please visit the “Get Involved” page to learn more and connect.
Funding:
What’s the honorarium for?
The honorarium can be used for whatever you like, such as the facilitation of the residency, including travel. You will receive half of the honorarium amount after your initial contract is signed and half after the completion of the residency.
How can I expect to receive the honorarium?
For domestic participants, you will receive checks. The first half will be mailed to you prior to arriving in Pittsburgh; the second half will be paid in-person at the end of your residency term.
For international participants, we can discuss options as it depends on your visa progam. Typically, we will wire transfer the first half prior to your arrival in Pittsburgh; the second half will again be wire transferred after your departure.
I booked my travel to Pittsburgh. Now what?
How you get to us is up to you! Whether you fly, drive, or jump on a train, we ask that you arrive on the assigned date and be ready for our welcome weekend. Please let us know if you have any questions about the best modes of transportation upon arriving in the city.
Can I apply for more funding?
As of now, we don’t have other funding.
Accommodations:
What’s your COVID policy?
While it is subject to change depending on the status of the CDC guidelines, we currently do not have an enforced Covid policy. We do not require masking or testing at any of our public events. For private events, which are held in the Pedantic Apartment, we do offer an option of testing should a resident or guest prefer, the tests for which would be provided by Pedantic to all participants for that event.
Something went awry at the Pedantic Apartment. Who do I contact for this?
We’ll have a group email and group text for these kinds of questions. If you need something fixed or if there are any issues with the Pedantic space in which you reside, use either of those options to initiate things. Henry will usually address the apartment issues or let everyone know if another party needs to enter the space to attend to something.
Is everything on the schedule mandatory?
We’ll share a basic schedule that includes two public events, four weekly invite-only dinners, and three field trips from your local guides. We also plan one weekend away exploring the nearby town of Ligonier. We ask that you attend all of these sessions, however we understand when circumstances mean you may need to miss something. There will be other invites that pop up that will be optional.
Can I work remotely while doing this residency?
Yes, as long as you feel comfortable taking on the expectations of our residency alongside working.
I need some accommodations. Is that possible?
Yes! Our building is ADA compliant and one of the bedrooms and bathrooms are specifically built with wheelchair access in mind. For any other accommodation requests, we ask that you let us know as soon as possible so that we can try to ensure your comfort and participation in the program.
Can I bring others?
Please talk to us if you’d like to bring another person or a pet for your residency period. We are happy to review requests on a case-by-case basis.
Generally speaking, research grantees may bring a collaborator or guest, human or animal, with prior communication and approval from the Pedantic team. We unfortunately cannot be as accommodating to Pedantic residents who will be here for the 4-week residency terms. As it is a shared space among three individuals focusing on connection and immersion, human and animal companions are not allowed to join.
