California history is often thought of as synonymous with the railroad and the gold rush, but Black history is not. “Black Gold: Stories Untold,” a major new exhibition at Fort Point running Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays through Nov. 2, illuminates those lesser-known histories through contemporary art and serves a vital purpose as it does so.

FOR-SITE is organizing the exhibit, which San Francisco gallerist and FOR-SITE Founding Director Cheryl Haines said she had the idea for nearly 20 years ago. In 2007, Haines learned the history of the Buffalo Soldiers, regiments of Black soldiers who served on the Western frontier following the Civil War. Her concept quickly grew to encompass Black history in the early years of California statehood.
